What is Diabetes? 

Diabetes is the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood is controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is made by the pancreas which lies just behind the stomach. the purpose of insulin is to help glucose to enter the body cells. Glucose is then used as fuel for everyday physical activity.

Diabetes is a disease in which the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because insulin is not being produced or does not work as it should. Diabetes therefore effects the body’s ability to convert glucose into energy.

it is reported that 1.4 million people in the UK are known to have the disease. This equates to about 3 in every 100 people. Over three – quarters of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

What are the different types of Diabetes are there? 

Type 1 diabetes is insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), This normally develops suddenly in childhood / young adult life / before the age of 40.

Often closely linked to obesity (approximately 80% of type 2 diabetics are obese or over weight)

Can be managed through lifestyle modifications including weight loss, reduction in dietary sugar intake, and increased physical activity. May Require a combination of diet and tablets or diet and insulin injections depending on severity.  Make sure you pay close attention to your feet. Due to possible nerve damage, blisters and cuts can occur without any sensation of pain.
